Model making of the french fishing boat “La Provencale” – Part 01

The “La Provencale”, a french fishing boat from the early 20th century is the first wooden model ship I’ve ever built. Artesania Latina offers this beginner model kit.
While building this kit I gained valuable experience. That will be useful in future wooden model ship building projects.

Unboxing a new model kit is always exciting. You open the box and take your first look at the parts. This part starts with that unboxing.

Next, I cut out the keel and frames of the laser-cut wooden panels. And therefor I needed to sand down the ribs.
Once that’s done, I glued the frames into the keel with wood glue. To facilitate hull construction, Artesania Latina includes a wooden base plate. Into this I glued the frames, ensuring they are perpendicular to the keel.

Bending the ship’s planks was also a completely new experience for me. I briefly soaked the planks in cold water and then used a bending iron.

What I can already say is that building the model of the French fishing boat “La Provencale” is a lot of fun. I’m excited to see how it turns out.

Part 1 covers the following topics:

  • Unboxing
  • Removing the parts
  • Sanding the hull parts
  • Gluing the frames
  • Gluing the ship’s bottom
  • Bending the planking
  • Gluing the planking

I documented all topics step by step in a gallery below and at my facebook account and at my instagram account. And the corresponding video below is published at my YouTube channel.
